July TBR + A New Challenge

Hello readers! I hit a 2nd round of that reading slump in June, but I am back and super excited to read and start a new challenge! I’m going to try not to put more than 8 books on my TBRs from now on… hopefully, but we will see.

You know that phrase that goes ‘My eyes were bigger than my stomach’? I feel like that, but with books. My ambition is bigger than how much I can actually read!

For a couple months now, I have been working on a project that I have mentioned a few times. I want to start a Read the World challenge! I have two rules. I will pick a continent, part of a continent, or just one country, and try to read 3 or more books by authors from that country or countries. I’m going to keep this up until I feel like stopping, hopefully that will be a few years away. I hope to read a book by an author from every country. My 2nd rule is that only one book I read can be non-fiction. I don’t have any non-fiction in this round, but I will in the future.

In July, I plan on reading from Oceania! Feel free to throw me recommendations. I will be revisiting Oceania again in the future. Let me know if you guys would like to know what country(ies) I am planning for in the future. I have about 8 months planned so far.

Yanagihara is Native Hawaiian, and I know what your thinking. It isn’t part of Oceania. Upon doing some research, I found that Hawaii is not part of any continent, but they are pacific islander, and all pacific islander countries reside in Oceania. To me, it makes sense!

I am both equally terrified and excited for this book. I love books that devastate me, but I don’t like to know beforehand. I don’t know much about this book, other than what I have seen in the trigger warnings, but I think I am ready to tackle this giant sad book.

Many people would think this is an American book because the show is set in California, but Liane Moriarty is Australian and this book is also set in Australia.

All I know about this book is it’s a mystery and about a bunch of moms. I haven’t seen the show before, but I might once I check this book out.

The Bone People stood out to me for a few reasons. One, Keri Hulme is Indigenous New Zealander and also ACE. I am a little worried that it’s tagged as magical realism on Goodreads, but I’m hopeful that I will enjoy this book! Sometimes stepping out of our comfort zones can be a good thing!

I received an ARC of this one from Netgalley and am probably the most excited for this book! Battle Royal is a rivals to lovers romance book that centers around a baking competition. I love books that involve food, bonus points if there is a food competition. It comes out on the 17th of August and I couldn’t wait that long to get my hands on it!

Vaite is a French Polynesian author and Breadfruit is the first book in her Meterena Mahi series. This book is about Meterena getting drunkinly engaged to a guy. She starts planning the wedding and he seems to forget the engagement even happened. This book has less than 500 ratings on Goodreads, but I’m excited to see where it all goes.

I was contacted by the author to be sent this book. It took a while to get here, but once it did, I was surprised to find she is from Ireland! This is a self pubbed book and is currently only 1 dollar on Kindle.

A Touch of Death is a dystopian novel about a Kingdom where the rich live in the capital, far from the famine and disease around the rest of the Kingdom. It seems what lies outside of said Kingdom are mutants.

I haven’t read a dystopian in a while, so I’m excited to dive in!

Booktuber Jess Owens just started a new non-fiction bi-monthly book club called Book Communiread and I’m really excited to participate! I love reading non-fiction, but I don’t read it too often, so this will give me a push to do so.

Plus, I love watching Jess and have been watching since around the time she started making videos.

I almost forgot to mention this one! I also have an ARC of Small Favors by Erin A. Craig. This one comes out on July 27th. The last two ARCs that I have read, I read AFTER the day it came out and I’m not going to keep on making that a trend. I know this takes place in a small town, is a loose retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, and monsters come out and kill people. The cover is quite light and pretty, but the contents of this book seem really dark.
