How I’m Doing on My Reading Goals

Hello readers! It is somehow now July, so I thought it would be a great time to take you all back with me to see how I have done on my reading goals this year. I have been trying to keep up on them, but I’m sure there are some I have forgot or a slacking on.

I like having a lot of goals and a lot of really specific goals because it is motivating to me. However, it wont be the end of the world if I don’t hit every one.

If you would like to check out my reading goals of 2021, the link is HERE. Comment down below and let me know how you are doing on your goals!

Goal #1 was to read more new releases. I read 18 new releases in 2020 and have read 11 in 2021. I think I’m on track to hit that goal. I started getting approved for books on Netgalley back in February, so that has helped this along. I would call this one a success!

Goal #2 was my Goodreads goal. I wanted to read 150 books and have since upped that to 200. I have read 102 books this year, which is crazy! I think this has to do with the amount of graphic novels I have read in 2021. Either way, I should hit that goal and my new goal this year.

Goal #3 was to read more books over 500 pages and less under 300. This one hasn’t went well. Since I have been reading a lot more graphic novels, a lot of my books have been under 300. However, I have given up on this one.

I usually make a goal like this because I don’t enjoy short books, but this year I am letting myself read more short books. I haven’t been disliking them quite as much in 2021, so I’m letting myself read whatever page count I feel like.

Goal #4 is to read more books by Indigenous authors. I know I have done this, but I want to do it better. I’ve read 4 books by Indigenous authors in 2021 and I think I only read one in 2020. For my new Read the World Challenge, I have added American/Canadian Indigenous authors to the list.

Goal #5 is to finish 10 series. I am behind on this one. I’ve finished 4 series this year so far. I have really been reading more books in series in 2021 and the beginning of the series, but not many last books in series. I’m most likely going to do a series challenge in 2022 to finish all these series.

Goal #6 is to have less books on my TBR at the end of the year than I did at the beginning of the year. I started at 53 and currently have 60. I am confident I can do this.

I also wanted to read or get rid of all the books I acquired before 2019. I have 5 books left, but I am doing an unhaul this month and will get rid of some of them.

Goal #7 was to try some new genres I haven’t really dived into before. I specifically said historical fantasy, historical mystery, and sci-fi horror. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve read anything in these genres, but we will see what happens in the second half the year.

Goal #8 was to read some of the winners for the Goodreads Choice Awards, Shaded Choice Awards, and try to hit as many Read Harder Challenges as I can. I have not been keeping up with these, at all. I did in 2020, but back then I didn’t have as many books and authors I wanted to try. I was just using Goodreads Choice Awards as a guide. I might still try to hit these goals, but I’m not sure.

Goal #9 was to read one book for the Buzzword Readathon each month. I have done this every month except January. I ended up not finishing both books I tried to read in January for this challenge.

I think I’ve done pretty well on some goals and not so much on others, but I have been really enjoying my reading in 2021 and that is really what matters!
