Anti-TBR Book Tag

Hello readers! I was perusing my blog for all the tags I’ve done. I was SHOCKED to find I’ve only done ONE in the entirety of 2022. It was the Mid-Year Freak Out Tag, if you were curious. I made myself a list of tags and I hope to start posting them more often.

When looking all the way back to the beginning of my blog, I found the Anti-TBR Book TAh, which I did before I came over to WordPress from Wix. This tag was created by a Booktuber named Nicole & Her Books. The purpose of the tag is to talk about books you are not interested in reading and was inspired by those anti-hauls that beauty YouTubers do.

1. A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading?

I know everyone loves this book (and Jay Kristoff in general), but I have no interest in it or him as an author. I’ve heard a lot about his writing, which is a writing style that I don’t like. I don’t like the flowery, overly-metaphorical writing style.

2. A classic book (or author) you don’t have any interest in reading?

Hugh Lofting because his Dr. Doolittle series is really freaking racist. I am not against separating authors from their work, but this was BAD! Like many millennials, I watched Dr. Dollitle as a child and thought it would be fun to read the books with step-daughter. At the time, she was 4, had just moved in with us, and couldn’t read yet. At first, I would skip over the bad words, but when I kept seeing the N-word over and over, I couldn’t do it anymore and we switched to a different book. There is LITERALLY a scene where Dr. Dolittle bleaches a black mans skin. That book was in the children’s section of my library… I don’t care what year it was published, that is inexcusable.

3. An author or problematic author whose books you have no interest in reading?

I would say authors that are popular among older people. Please don’t think I’m calling you old if you like these authors! I just think they are most popularly read by people of my mother’s age. I’m talking about Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, Josh Grisham, and James Patterson. I’m not sure why, but these type of authors have never appealed to me. There isn’t anything wrong with them! Of course, I could change my mind one day, but I don’t think I will.

4. An author you have read a couple of books from & have decided their books are not for you?

The thing is, I thought Ruth Ware would be a favorite author for me. However, I like every book I read by her less than the last one. I really enjoyed In a Dark, Dark Wood, but it only went downhill from there. I was going to read 1 more, but I really don’t want to. This author just isn’t for me.

5. A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into & couldn’t?

If you asked me this around a year ago, I would’ve easily said romance or scifi. However, I think the answer would be magical realism. I don’t always dislike magical realism, but it always ends up too weird for me. I have been reading far out of my comfort zone this year, but I don’t think magical realism would ever be in my comfort zone.

6. A book you have bought but will never read?

I bought this book at the dollar store around a decade ago. I never want to get rid of it, but will I ever read it? Probably not. I know it is about Charlie Chaplin and I like the way the book looks. I mean, I have had books longer and read them. Never say never, I suppose.

7. A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started & have DNF’d?

Like many people, I read The Giver as a kid and really loved it. A few years ago I decided to read book 2. If you didn’t know, this is a 4-book series.

The second book in the series, Gathering Blue, was just not for me. I didn’t like the story, the characters, or anything else. It lacks so much that The Giver had, so I had to quit the series.

8. A new release you have no interest in?

I’ve read and tried so many of Black’s books in the last decade or so and I think she just isn’t for me. I’ve been seeing everyone reading this and the ratings are not the best. Either way, I can’t be swayed to read it.
